oh, honey! that's salome, alright. ain't she pretty under that full full moon?

What would the story of Salome look like if it were set in, say, Jacksonian America? Would it translate? Saura plays with translation some in his film. John the Baptist is played by a black man, and the dances are flamenco (I am not sure what style the dance of the seven veils is, but we can investigate that). The difference is in the production of the play. The plot is mostly the same, but Saura plays with characterization a lot within the narrative framework. John seems to respond to Salome's love for a rather prolonged intimate dance before he retreats (different from the play, right?), monk-like, into his prophetic habitus. Honestly, I have not finished the movie, so I don't know how the rest of it is framed, but I wonder that there have been no fully "real world" reworkings of this. I really, really want to see Al Pacino's Salomaybe?
